The Man Who Changed the World, and Still Thinks We’re Just Getting Started
Sharing a stage with Tim Berners-Lee is one of those moments that makes you reconsider what innovation actually looks like. After all, this is the man who invented the World Wide Web.
Not another app.
Not another platform.
Not another billion-dollar startup.
An idea that fundamentally changed how billions of people communicate, learn, work, shop, argue, create and do business. So you might expect the architect of the Web to talk like a monument to technology history.
He doesn’t.
Meeting the legend
When Cherno Jobatey met Tim Berners-Lee, he encountered someone lively, curious and remarkably focused on what comes next. Berners-Lee dove into the story of how the Web emerged, how ideas become innovations, and why some of technology’s greatest breakthroughs cannot be planned in the way business likes to imagine.
One sentence stayed with Cherno: “Innovation is serendipity, so you don’t know what people will make.”
That sounds almost dangerously simple. But for leaders trying to navigate AI, disruption and accelerating technological change, it raises a much bigger question:
What if the future cannot be managed into existence?
What if you have to create the conditions for it to emerge? Innovation Doesn’t Always Start With a Business Plan
Companies love innovation. At least in PowerPoint. We build innovation labs. Create roadmaps. Define KPIs. Set quarterly targets. Hire consultants. Launch transformation programs. But genuine innovation has an inconvenient habit of refusing to follow the spreadsheet.
The World Wide Web is perhaps the ultimate example.
Its impact became dramatically larger than its original context because people around the world began building things on top of it that nobody could fully predict. That is what Berners-Lee means by serendipity.
Innovation requires strategy. But it also requires openness.
Space for experimentation.
Space for curiosity.
Space for unexpected connections.
And sometimes space for an idea whose business case isn’t obvious, yet.
For leaders, that creates an uncomfortable challenge: Are you really building an innovative organization, or an organization in which every new idea has to prove its ROI before it has had the chance to become new?
The Biggest Part of the Web May Still Be Ahead of Us
Perhaps the most provocative thing about meeting the inventor of the World Wide Web is discovering that he doesn’t talk about it as a finished revolution. Quite the opposite. “The Web as I envisaged it, we have not seen it yet. The future is still so much bigger than the past.”
Think about that. We have watched the Web transform media, retail, banking, entertainment, politics, advertising, relationships and entire industries.
Companies worth trillions have been built on it. And its inventor says: We haven’t seen it yet.
That is a powerful antidote to one of the most dangerous sentences in business:
We understand this technology now.
We said it about the Internet.
We said it about smartphones.
And today, plenty of people are already saying it about AI. History suggests caution. The first wave of a technology rarely tells you what technology will ultimately become.
What Happens When Data Stops Living in Silos?
Berners-Lee saw another development coming long before data became one of business’s favorite buzzwords: “It’s difficult to imagine the power that you’re going to have when so many different sorts of data are available.”
Today, that observation feels even more consequential. AI is becoming more powerful. Computing is becoming more powerful. Organizations possess extraordinary amounts of information. But possessing data and creating value from it are very different things. The real opportunity emerges when information can connect intelligently across boundaries—and when people can actually use those connections to make better decisions.
Which creates another leadership question: If your company has more data than ever, why are so many decisions still made with incomplete information?
The competitive advantage may no longer be who owns the most data. It may be who can connect it, understand it and turn it into action fastest.
Stop Blaming Technology
Every technological revolution produces optimism. Then come the unintended consequences.
Misinformation. Manipulation. Cybercrime. Surveillance. Polarization. Addiction. Bias. And increasingly, the technology itself becomes the defendant.
Berners-Lee offers a more demanding perspective: “We can’t blame the technology when we make mistakes.”
That matters enormously in the age of AI. Technology doesn’t eliminate leadership responsibility. It increases it.
Algorithms are built by people.
Systems are deployed by people.
Incentives are designed by people.
Decisions about what technology should—and should not—do are made by people.
The question for leaders therefore isn’t simply: What can this technology do?
It is: What should we do with what this technology can do?
Your Digital Transformation May Not Have a Technology Problem
Berners-Lee also made an observation that should probably be pinned to the wall of every digital transformation office: “I think IT projects are about supporting social systems—about communications between people and machines. They tend to fail due to cultural issues.”
There it is. One of the great paradoxes of digital transformation:
Companies spend millions upgrading technology while underestimating the people expected to use it.
The software works. The transformation doesn’t. Why?
Because organizations are not machines.
They are networks of habits, incentives, fears, hierarchies, ambitions and relationships. You can install new technology in months. Changing behavior can take years.
That means digital transformation is not primarily about getting people to understand the technology. It is about getting people to change what they do because of it. And that is a leadership challenge.
The Future Needs More Than Technologists
There was another Berners-Lee statement that feels even more urgent today: “We need diversity of thought in the world to face the new challenges.”
Not diversity for the annual report. Diversity as competitive infrastructure.
Because increasingly complex problems cannot be solved by rooms full of people who studied the same subjects, built similar careers and instinctively see the world in similar ways.
AI needs technologists.
But it also needs economists, ethicists, entrepreneurs, psychologists, creatives, policymakers and people willing to ask the question nobody else in the room is asking. The harder the problem, the more dangerous intellectual monoculture becomes. Sometimes Changing the World Means Missing Lunch
And then there is perhaps the most human Berners-Lee observation of all: “Anyone who has lost track of time when using a computer knows the propensity to dream, the urge to make dreams come true and the tendency to miss lunch.”
Behind one of history’s greatest technological transformations was something surprisingly old-fashioned: Curiosity!
The desire to make something.
The willingness to become so absorbed in a problem that you forget what time it is. We talk endlessly about innovation ecosystems, digital strategies and transformation frameworks. All of them matter.
But breakthroughs still begin with human beings who become fascinated by a possibility.
People who ask: Why not? What if? Could this work?
And then keep going long enough to find out.
Leadership Lesson: Don’t Just Predict the Future. Make Room for It.
Meeting Tim Berners-Lee was a reminder that the people who change the world don’t necessarily have a perfect picture of what comes next.
Sometimes they build something that allows millions of other people to create what comes next. That may be one of the most important leadership lessons of the digital age.
You cannot predict every application of AI.
You cannot spreadsheet your way through every disruption.
You cannot control every consequence of innovation.
But you can build organizations with enough curiosity to experiment, enough diversity to challenge assumptions, enough courage to let new ideas breathe—and enough responsibility to ask what those ideas will do to people.
Tim Berners-Lee helped create the Web that changed our world.
And perhaps his most provocative message is that the most important part of that future may still be waiting to be invented.
