Most people know Cherno in a suit, delivering keynotes or asking sharp political questions in a podcast or on national television .
That’s why the crowd at Berlin’s Hard Rock Café did a double take when Cherno jumped on stage and plugged in a guitar.
No cameras.
No script.
Just music.
What followed wasn’t a cameo. It was a spontaneous concert; hip-hop meets rock meets reggae kissing pop. The audience didn’t stay seated for long. The stage turned into a dance floor.
As Guitar magazine put it: “the room caught fire”.
Music Was First
This wasn’t a hobby gone rogue.
Music came before the news desk.
Cherno grew up with it, his mother a pianist, his early-stage life defined by amplifiers, not microphones. As guitarist and vocalist for Groove Gangster Inc., Cherno played everywhere Berlin would let him: backyards, street festivals, small stages that demanded volume and presence.
The band climbed fast, warming up crowds for acts like the Leningrad Cowboys. Once, a teenage Cherno and his Groove Gangster Inc., even took the stage before German stadium Rock-legend Herbert Grönemeyer.
That’s not a footnote. That’s training!
The TV-guy You Don’t See on TV
Berlin’s BZ newspaper once summed it up perfectly after a street-festival appearance: “ZDF-TV’s news guy, as we rarely see him.”
His favorite song that night?
A hip-hop version of AC/DC’s Back in Black.
The same man audiences associate with politics, presidents, and power, suddenly shredding riffs and smiling like it’s 1999.
Two Worlds. One Rhythm.
After university and time abroad, the Groove Gangster GmbH party-band broke up. Journalism took over. The guitar stepped aside.
But it never left.
Cherno still plays guitar and sings whenever the moment is right. Sometimes those moments collide beautifully, when political leaders, CEOs, business figures, or union bosses pick up guitars and jam along with his Groove Gangster Inc..The result is something rare: authority without stiffness, seriousness without gravity.
